Sarah began working as a freelance writer and editor seven years ago, after a decade of working as a counsellor and educator in the anti-violence sector. Clients have included non-profit social services and arts organizations as well as publishers and educational institutions.
She is also a writer and cartoonist, and received her MFA in Creative Writing from UBC in 2007 with the first graphic thesis in the history of the program, a memoir about her mother’s illness and death from Alzheimer’s Disease. She is in the process of sending her manuscript to publishers. Sarah’s comics and illustrations have appeared in Geist magazine and Modern Dog magazine, and she regularly adds new drawings to her blog and to the Sarah Leavitt’s Creatures group on Facebook.
Sarah’s fiction and non-fiction have been published in Geist, Maisonneuve, the Globe and Mail, the Vancouver Review and a number of anthologies. She writes a monthly opinion column for Xtra West, and has written short documentaries for Definitely Not the Opera on CBC Radio.
Sarah joined Social Signal last year to assist with content development and community moderation.
